Shar Vahl - Progressive Smithing Quests

Purchase a carapace shield frame from Master Barkhem in Shar Vahl. Fill it with 8 small bloodling carapaces and combine. Hand the result to Master Barkhem and he gives you a bloodling carapace plate. Repeat the quest a second time. Then combine two bloodling carapace plates with nepeta oil extract (merchant sold) and a (medium) sectional mail mold in the forge. Trivial <=56. Hand the completed Bloodling Plate Mail tunic to Master Barkhem. He will return the tunic and give you a Vah Shir apprentice mallet (no drop, lore). (Bloodling Plate Mail: AC 13, sv disease 1, wt 7.5; WAR CLR PAL RNG SHD BRD ROG SHM; HUM BAR ERU ELF HIE DEF HEF IKS VAH) Should you ever lose your apprentice mallet, you may hand in the tunic again to receive another one.

Then ask Master Barkhem "what repair order?" He will give you a (lore) work order to repair the shields of the 4 bridge guards (the two guards on the far end of the North and South Bridges). Hand the note to one of the proper guards. (Make absolutely sure before you hand in the note to the guard, that the guard's shield is visible. If you cannot see their shield, then someone else is running the quest with that guard, and handing in the note to that guard will cause him/her to despawn.) The guard will give you a dented shield, which starts the timed portion of this quest. Combine the dented shield and the Vah Shir apprentice mallet in the forge. (If you fail the combine, you must let the timer run out before you try to repair another shield for him, as he'll think you already have his shield, and will depop on you if you try to hand him another note.) A successful combine will return an Immaculate Shield, and lists the guard's name in the description, so that you remember your delivery target. Return the shield to the guard to receive a completed repair order. If the guard already has a shield on him, you either took too long, or something caused the guard to respawn. You will need to have someone else hand in a work order to that guard so that you may then give the guard the Immaculate Shield. (Note: while the despawning problem has been reported as "fixed", there are apparently still issues with guards despawning, respawning.) Trivials are as follows: Bohk's Immaculate Shield -- triv 31; Koby's Immaculate Shield -- triv 31; Jasir's Immaculate Shield -- triv 31; Aihjin's Immaculate Shield -- triv 34

Repeat the above paragraph four times, one for each of the four guards, until you have completed work orders for all four guards. Then give the 4 completed work orders back to the Master Barkhem and he will give you a spirit anchor anvil, called a Vah Shir Anvil (no drop, lore).

After a bit more conversation with Master Barkhem, you can learn about making shadow disks. He will give you an 8-slot "Barkhem's Box" in which to combine 8 shadow disks. The disks are made by combining the following in a forge: swirling shadows (drop off shades in Shadeweaver's Thicket; greater/lesser shadows in Twilight Sea and Xi Xau in Maiden's Eye and Akheva), metal bits, your Vah Shir Anvil and your Vah Shir Apprentice Mallet. (You receive the anvil and hammer back during the forging.) Trivial for this combine is 108.

Return the filled and combined box back to Master Barkhem along with your Apprentice Mallet and receive a luclinite hammer (no drop, just like pretty much every other quest tool for these quests). Then make 3 humming orbs using the following recipe: wailing substance (from grimy owlbears in Paludal Caverns), shrieking substance (from sonic wolves), metal rings, Vah Shir Anvil, Luclinite Mallet. (Again, you receive the anvil and mallet back during the forging.)

Return 3 humming orbs and your luclinite hammer to Master Barkhem for a humming luclinite mallet (no drop), with which you can make shadowscream steel armor.

If you are a glutton for punishment and are willing to loop this ad nauseum, ask Master Barkhem "what boots" and he will task you with delivering a pair of boots to Rakutah (leader of the rogue guild in Shar Vahl). Giving the boots to Ratukah will cause him to give you a 6-slot quest container and the boots. He asks you to fill the box with 6 pairs of shadowscream steel boots. Boots are made with the following recipe (in a forge): 2 swirling shadows, humming luclinite hammer, vah shir anvil, humming orb, (medium) banded boot mold, water flask (Trivial >239). Completion of this quest gives you postive faction with the Guardians of Shar Vahl, as well as Ratukah's Seal (lore, no drop).

Return the seal to Master Barkhem and he gives you a pair of Barkhem's Fancy Pantaloons (lore, no orop) STR 4, STA 2, WIS 2, SvMagic 10, Wt 4.0 WAR ROG SHM BST; VAH, BAR, TRL, OGR, IKS (note there is no AC to them). While Barkhem seems to indicate that there may be other things he may teach you in the future, there did not appear to be a continuation to this quest at this time.

Armor recpies, stats, trivals can be found here
(oh yeah just FYI SOME of this armor trivals at over 250)

FYI points of intreast on the humming orbs
the trival is 168
have the effect of Sonic Feedback (6point DS)
the orbs DO NOT stack (yeah ot say the least WAS NOT impressed with that)

best farming places...
small bloodling carapaces - what the mean are bloodling carapaces where the size when you right click them is small not that actual name..hey you might have whent duh but had me confused for about 10mins. the mobs are like lvl 1 or 2 and run around near the PoK book in SWT. you need 16 of them i got 14 of them from nOObs in SWT either through buffs or by paying like 4p each for them. they are sort of rare..not really rare just not common.

PC near the SWT zone for owlbears and the wailing substance, hter are only 4 spwans but you usually get 1 to 2 per round only had a few rounds where non dropped. alos picked up a perfect owlbear pelt there too... avg hps is about 425 to 500 (i just let my pet kill them). DO NOT bother going ot HSM it DOES NOT DROP THERE OR ITS MAJOR RARE.

TM at the katta zone for the Sonic Wolves. since i am doing this for my cleric and at lvl 42 she is not really able to solo them i left her sitting at the Katta zone and went out and pulled them to her. i got a stack in about 4 hours. avg hps is about 1200 to 1500 hps.

SWT just tracked and killed every lesser shade i could find for the Swirling Shadows. its not a common drop but considering the alt is AR and ME i will stick with SWT. well its a lvl 5 mob my 205 root kills them so not sure on hps but to say prob about 30 to 50hps cold be more could be less /shrug.

this quest is NOT for the weak hearted or ones looking for a quick fix its long and time consuming. i wanted to pull my hair out about 11 times doing this. i have yet to make any of the armor yet but i did finish all the hammer quest.

i wont be making the armor anytime soon. i just wanted to see what it would take to do it. and with the 50 point skill cap i need to lvl her up some more before i start making the armor. besides she has the suppies for about 20 skill ups on FS plate already in the bank.

Ya, high level smithing is a pain. The method you are going thru is the longer, but much cheaper route. Getting the Shar Val mallet and anvil items is sort of a pain, but the 'fun' really starts when you have to farm for shadowscream armor.

Just FYI, it seems that the to get from 188-250 doing shadowscream armor requires 1000+ smithing combines. And considering that each of those combines involves at least 4 farmed components (wailing substance, shrieking substance, 2x swirling shadows), you are looking at farming 4000+ pieces. ACK!!!

As for farming the wailing substances and the shrieking substances, the best place is Hollowshade Moor. To get the best results, you need to work the ongoing war till you get either the owlbears or the sonic wolves in the southern camp by the islands. Once that is done, you farm them from the islands and NOT from the mainland camp in the south. The island mobs are fairly eash and drop more substances than in any other place or zone. Working with a partner to pull large groups, Masin was able to AE and net about a stack per 20-30 min. Individual killing takes longer, but still is a better rate than anywhere else.

Swirling shadows are best obtained from the island in Twilight Sea from greater and lesser shadows. They are harder mobs than their SWT cousins, but are more centralized to one camp, and drop shadows more frequently.

Good luck.

I'll probably have to do this at some point. I'm really kicking myself for not smithing up before they had done the smithing neft. You used to be able to get to over 200 on fine plate.

Hunter Omegga Silvguard
90th Season Champion of Faydark
Forest Stalker of Norrath with 7k+ AA points.
Master Fletcher (300), Master Archer 375+AM3/EQ), Master Tracker (300), Master Forager (250)

I'm in the same boat as you Iane. Clermon started getting into the 3 sheet banded when I stoped funding his smithing habit. Now I kinda wish I would have stuck with it at least through to Fine plate. Oh well.
